Lecturer in French Language, Simon Fraser University

The Department of French at SFU invites applications for a continuing teaching appointment at the rank of Lecturer, effective as early as February 15th, 2022 with duties relating to the development and teaching of French language courses at all levels. Only those eligible to be appointed to the rank of Lecturer will be considered.
Qualifications:
- • The successful candidate must have a PhD in the teaching of French as a second language, French language pedagogy or linguistics applied to the teaching of French as a second language; the PhD must be completed by the employment start date or shortly thereafter.
- • Total fluency in oral and written French; a good fluency in English, which is the language of communication at SFU.
- • Evidence of excellent teaching skills, preferably in a North American context, and at least 3 continuous years of experience in the teaching of French as a second language at the university or college level.
Other sought competence and qualifications:
- • Demonstrated competence in planning and developing curricular material for French language courses at all levels, including experience in teaching asynchronous and synchronous on-line and/or blended classes.
- • Demonstrated ability to use student-oriented learning strategies and to create a positive, inclusive and dynamic learning environment in the classroom and in group interactions.
- • Capacity to use appropriate (online) technologies to support learning.
- • Ability to train and/or oversee temporary language instructors and/or Teaching Assistants.
- • Evidence of leadership and ability to work as part of a team of language instructors.
- • Professional development, e.g., participation at French language teaching conferences and workshops (the publication of textbooks or professional articles in the domain, while not required, is valued and supported).
- • Some teaching experience and/or formal training in translation would be an asset.
Responsibilities include:
- • Full responsibility for the development, upgrades and delivery of three courses, or their equivalent, in each of the Fall and Spring semesters and two courses in the Summer semester (intersession of 6.5 weeks).
- • Training and overseeing of Teaching Assistants, which includes, among other associated duties, the preparation of exams and the evaluation and grading of students.
- • Collaborating with the team of Lecturers on language program and course-related tasks, including representation and promotion.
- • Participation in departmental and university committees and meetings and in the Department of French self-governance.

- • The teaching dossier should include samples of course plans for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and student evaluations for the last 3 years.
