ACLA launched a new mentorship program in 2023. This mentorship program provides students opportunities to be mentored by an experienced researcher, where students and mentors can meet once online and once during our annual conference.
We pair or group participants into two roles:
-
Student: undergraduate, graduate or post-doc student who is an ACLA member currently pursuing their studies in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Indigenous Education or related area. The student should be interested in receiving mentorship in preparing to pursue further studies, preparing for the job market, disseminating research results (conference presentations, publications, and other types), or other related topics.
-
Mentor: A mentor is considered an ACLA member who has experience in academia (e.g., professor, researcher) or professional institution (e.g., university, school, NGO, government agency, company). A mentor will likely have a PhD in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Indigenous Education or related areas. Mentors may be retired academics.
We offer two types of mentorships:
-
Option 1 – Small-Group: Students will be placed into groups of 2 or 3 and paired with a mentor. The mentorship consists of a one-hour meeting via Zoom to discuss topics brought up by students. Topics may include academic conferences, publications, academic job market, navigating academia, or any topics related to Applied Linguistics and related areas. The students are encouraged to set up a one-hour informal chat with the mentor during the ACLA conference (at students’ request).
-
Option 2 – One-on-One Mentoring: Students will be paired with an individual mentor. The mentorship consists of a one-hour meeting via Zoom to discuss more individualized topics brought up by the student. Topics may include developing a researcher identity, securing research funding, and the academic job market, or any topics related to Applied Linguistics and related areas. The students are encouraged to set up a one-hour informal chat with the mentor during the ACLA conference (at students’ request).
Note: Your commitment is for the current year’s ACLA conference. In subsequent years, you will have the opportunity to sign up again.
If you are a student or a professor/researcher and wish to participate, sign up by April 1, 2024.
Registrations for ACLA 2024 Mentorship Program are closed. If you are an ACLA member, you will receive the invitation to sign up for the next mentorship program (for ACLA 2025) in early 2025.
